Bring in the new year with Treefest 2020!
Join us to plant 750 metres of native hedgerow and 1.5 hectares of new woodland.
Saturday 1st February 2020
@ West Town Farm, Ide, Exeter EX2 9TG
10am to Midnight
Car parking and partying at West Town Farm.
We will be planting at adjoining farm The Barton, Barton Lane, Shillingford Abbot, Exeter EX2 9QQ.
Throughout the day, whilst we are planting, there will be shelter, tea, cake and warm soup in the barn with tree planters yoga, hedgedress making, woodland art and activities, singing and general merriment. We will set up a ‘Forest in a Box’ tree nursery and plant 1,000 seeds for woodlands of the future. As evening falls, a tractor and trailer ride will take us to the top of the hill to party at West Town Farm. Here, planters will be greeted by our cheery Tree Huggers’ Arms bar serving mulled cider to warm us up, with interesting talks and storytelling. Delicious home made food will be available before we dance the night away to bands and a DJ.
Because it is February, we are not recommending camping overnight. However, if you need to stay, there will be limited space for vans to park and some ‘bunkhouse’ accommodation available in a barn heated by a woodburner. You need to bring your own roll mat, sleeping bag and earplugs if you are a light sleeper! Please note that places are limited and the bunkhouse accommodation is booking up fast. So book your Treefest 2020 ticket now and reserve a bunk.

Because we have a whopping 6,500 trees to plant we are aiming to devote Friday 31st January to planting the hedge. We are looking to recruit 50 Tree Champions, each prepared to plant 100 trees that day. On Saturday the Tree Champions will act as mentors to inexperienced tree planters and guide them in planting the woodland.
Matt Somerville of Bee Kind Hives will talk about sustainable bee keeping.
Tim Hutton of The Wild Circle will talk about circular patterns and cycles of life.
Chris Jones will talk about reintroducing beavers into Cornwall.
Please visit our facebook page and share this event with fellow tree-lovin’ folk.

Planting it forward seed by seed.
At our Treefest 2020 event we will be initiating the Tree by Tree “Forest in a Box” tree nursery project.
We will be planting more than 200 locally harvested Acorns using a method inspired by the copy nature forest floor seedling incubator system employed in The Woodland League “Forest in a Box” project. This system provides a growing environment that will optimise the health and vigour of saplings by recreating as much as possible the forest floor in which they would naturally be growing as part of natural regeneration.
The landowners hosting Treefest 2020 have committed to caring for the seedlings and after 2 years, the whips will be ready for planting out on the land, or at a future Treefest event.
This year we will pilot this practical solution for landowners willing to reforest areas of their land, to do so over the coming years, not just at a one-off event. And it is also a great opportunity to re-use tree guards! Each time we hold a tree planting event, we also pledge to plant more “Forests in boxes” – planting it forward.
